漆黑ペストマスク Plague Mask

ペストマスクはペスト医師が黒死病治療のために使用したマスクです。
しかしヤブ医者や一攫千金のために名乗り出る者の方が多いのでした。
くちばしには主に気つけ薬を入れます。

The plague mask was used during those dark times to keep the wearer safe against getting the plague by keeping the “bad air” out. They would stuff the nose part with herbs and flowers and smelling salts to ward off the disease while dealing with the sick. Many of these doctors were quacks who did more harm than good. Or just used these to help with body disposal.

なぜスチームパンクとペストマスクが結びつくのか未だに解明されていませんが、当時の壊滅的な謎の治療にあたる姿が新しい技術やディストピアに帰結しているのだろうと船長は考えています。
So why was the plague mask sometimes associated with the plague mask? It’s a nice combination....no one has answered why they are often together but my wild guess: plague disasters are a type of dystopia, same as SF, and trying to make new technology via human cures.
